The General supports Postecoglou

The knives are out for Ange Postecoglou after the 4-2 defeat at Anfield, with many keyboard warriors calling for his head as the season goes into its final furlong. I would advise Ange not to read any social media on this Bank Holiday Monday, unless he wants to find out how few friends he has approaching the end of his first year as Tottenham's head coach.

There is the poison of pessimism hanging around the Tottenham camp after four consecutive defeats. I have not written a line like that since the days when then manager Ossie Ardiles had the nightmare of seven successive losses in the winter of 1994.

The online criticism of the affable Greek-Aussie reached a crescendo when the scoreline at Anfield hit its nadir at 4-0 and before a mini-recovery by a Spurs team clinging by its fingernails to fifth place in the Premier League........

Spurs Odyssey Premier League Match Report
. Liverpool 4 Spurs 2 - Another defeat as Spurs once again respond with too little too late
. Liverpool v Spurs Preview - Another unenviable trip to Anfield

Anfield, 05.05.24

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for capturing this image

The omens going into this game were fairly ominous. Spurs had won only twice in the last 36 league visits to Anfield, most recently in 2011. Spurs had lost three league games in a row. A fourth defeat would be the worst run since the team lost six consecutive league matches between October and November 2004, almost twenty years ago, during the managerial transition from Jacques Santini to Martin Jol. Lastly in his ninth Premier League season Jurgen Klopp has never lost a game during the month of May.

Thus it came to pass that Liverpool beat Spurs. There were some parallels with the North London derby a week ago. The opposition was allowed to build up an insurmountable lead. Facing a heavy defeat the team once again found some inspiration later in the game. However once again while it seemed good at the time it was too little too late........

Stamford Bridge, 02.05.24

Thanks to Eugene Gasper for capturing this image

Do you remember those halcyon days of April 2010 when we beat both Arsenal and Chelsea 2-1 in consecutive games? Gareth Bale scored in both games, and we had the little magician Luka Modric in midfield. Spurs famously went on to qualify for the Champions League when they beat Manchester City 1-0.

Welcome to the parallel universe of 2024 when we lost consecutive games to Arsenal, then Chelsea, and surely surrendered any chance of Champions League football next season.

Tonight's defeat was to a Chelsea side coached by our former leader Mauricio Pochettino. Chelsea's tenth Premier League double over Spurs was achieved with 14 players listed as injured, and a bench which included no less than seven youngsters with little experience of Premier League football.

The Chelsea curse continues, and we have managed just one win at Stamford Bridge in 38 attempts.......

R.I.P Double Legend Terry Medwin

I was very saddened to read today (May 1st, 2024) of the passing of Spurs Double Legend Terry Medwin at the age of 91. Terry and his wife had only recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

References to Terry can be found on various pages on the site (see the Google site search facility at the bottom of the home page), but I would point you to the following pages:-

2. The Double commemorative plate.
3. Norman Giller's blog dated 28th February, 2022

Terry Medwin was an integral part of the historic Double-winning squad and his name will live on for all time.

· Spurs 2 Arsenal 3 - Brazen, confident, and clinical Arsenal win again
· Spurs v Arsenal Preview - Just give it everything Spurs!
. Spurs record in recent London Derby League matches

Spurs v Arsenal, 28.04.24

We witnessed a once in 36 years phenomenon yesterday as Arsenal won back to back league games at Tottenham for the first time since 1987 and 1988. That 1988 defeat was also a 3-2 when all the goals came in the first half. On that occasion our nemesis won 5 consecutive league and cup games at White Hart Lane. We must hope that this victory does not herald a league title or another period of dominance over Spurs.

Yesterday, Arsenal fans were brazen. I can't recall so many shiny red and white scarves being openly displayed on their way to the ground, and of course those colours became more and more prevalent in the away section as the game progressed.

Arriving and leaving at the top of the league, Mikel Arteta's men were confident, and clinical in front of goal, assisted by poor Spurs defending, particularly at corners. We even set them on their way with an own goal by Hojbjerg..........

Spurs Odyssey Message Board

Spurs Odyssey Message Board

Visit the Spurs Odyssey Message Board

The most epic thread on The Spurs Odyssey message board was one which started in 2010. This provided the history of our new stadium applications (including the thankfully unsuccessful bid for the Olympic Stadium) right up to the present day with images of the completed new stadium. In the early hours of Saturday 20th October, 2018, our stadium thread reached 1,000 pages! There is a genuine community feel about the board, which is moderated.

Every Spurs match is covered with excellent threads, which feature images and stats from previous games. There is so much to enjoy about the message board which also has an off-topic section where non-football matters are discussed.

There is also a great archive of filed material with links to some great Spurs history and goals.

If you would like to become even more involved, then please e-mail me (webmaster@spursodyssey.com) stating your full name, address (Town and Country will suffice!) and desired user name, and I will do the rest.

I look forward to hearing from you!
