Another unenviable trip to Anfield

Anfield, 30.04.23

Thanks to Greg Smith for capturing this image

Spurs face another unenviable trip to Anfield on the back of three consecutive defeats. We have won on just two of our last 36 league visits to Anfield, most recently in May 2011. Such a result seems hardly likely for Sunday's 4.30pm game which is live on Sky Sports.

Jurgen Klopp announced his impending departure from Liverpool on 26th January, one month before the club's single trophy this season - The Carabao Cup. That was a 1-0 win over Chelsea, thanks to a 118th minute goal by Virgil van Dijk.

All the press talk surrounding Liverpool suggested a possible "quadruple" as a parting shot, but step by step, the three other possible trophy wins have crumbled. First there was an amazing 4-3 FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford in a game that also went to extra time. Harvey Elliott had given Liverpool a 3-2 win, but both Marcus Rashford and Diallo struck later to astonish everybody at the stadium along with TV viewers.

More amazement followed when Atalanta won 3-0 at Anfield which was enough to secure a comfortable aggregate win in The Europa League quarter-final.

Finally, while going into this game Liverpool do still have a mathematical hope of a second Premier League title win, such a prospect became unlikely after a 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park, followed by a 2-2 draw away to West Ham. Everton hadn't beaten Liverpool at home since 2010!

Furthermore, touchline scenes where Mo Salah openly argued with his manager before entering the playing field as a substitute indicated all has not been well recently at the club. The other two subs entering with Salah - Nunez and Gomes - encouraged Salah to stop his protestations. Salah and Nunez were two of five players dropped to the bench after the Everton defeat. The others were Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Curtis Jones.

There have also been rumours that Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contracts end next year (along with that of Salah) are not too happy at this time.

With Klopp at the helm (he was appointed in October 2015), Liverpool have won The Premier League once, The Champions League (at Spurs expense in 2019), The Club World Cup (once), one FA Cup and two League Cups. They've also been Champions League runners-up twice and Premier League runners-up twice during Klopp's reign. Jurgen will be given an emotional farewell when Liverpool host Wolves in their final game in two weeks' time.

Spurs have played Klopp's previous club - Borussia Dortmund - three times in recent years, and I can vouch for the idolisation of those fans foisted upon Jurgen, even after his departure.

Liverpool reached the League Cup final for a record 14th time this year and have won on 10 occasions. When they beat Spurs 3-1 (after extra time) in 1982, it was Liverpool's third final and the second of four consecutive wins, two of which went to extra time. The other two in this four-match run went to a replay.

In 1982, we would go on to win the FA Cup, while Liverpool won the league. They beat us 1-0 in the Charity Shield at the start of the next season.

Arne Slot's confirmation as the next Liverpool manager now looks a formality after Feyenoord verbally agreed a compensation package with the Anfield club. Last year Slot was being linked with us (prior to Ange Postecoglou's appointment) but he declared his intention to stay in Holland for another year.

This season's home game was memorable, not just because we won thanks to Joel Matip's late own goal from a powerful cross by Pedro Porro, but particularly for the controversy involving referee Simon Hooper and VAR over Luis Diaz's good goal being disallowed. Not for the only time this season, Jurgen Klopp was seething.

This was the first time Liverpool had two players sent-off in a game since a 4-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on 18 September 2011 (Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel).

Spurs scored two or more goals in each of first seven games of a league season for the first time since 1960-61 in League Division One. We also became the first team to record a 90th minute winner in consecutive home games in the Premier League since Burnley in November 2016. Spurs also scored twice in 9 consecutive league games between December and February this season.

Our September win was our first win over Liverpool since a 4-1 at Wembley in October 2017, and our first at Tottenham since November 2012.

We were flying at the start of the season and Ange Postecoglou won three consecutive manager of the month awards. Those were the days. Top of the league after 10 games with 26 points, we have since managed 34 points from the last 24 games. That's mediocre form.

If selected Heung-min Son will make his 300th Premier League appearance for Spurs, thus exceeding Darren Anderton's 299 to take third place in our Premier League appearances list behind Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.

Until last season's 4-3 away defeat Spurs had never before scored three goals at Anfield in a League game, and the only time they did score three here was in the League Cup in 1998, on their way to the 1999 trophy. It was the first time that Liverpool had allowed a three-goal lead to slip away in a home Premier League match.

After last season's away game Liverpool had scored 41 90th-minute winning goals in the Premier League, at least 11 more than any other side, while Tottenham had conceded 26 such winners, also a competition-high. Both clubs have added three more such goals this season. One of those Spurs goals was Matip's 96th minute own goal at Tottenham in September.

I submitted a prediction for a 2-2 draw before last night's defeat at Chelsea, and now I see nothing but another defeat for Spurs. Beating Burnley next Saturday and Sheffield United on the last day of the season remains our best hope of staying in fifth place.

Paul Tierney is refereeing Spurs for just the second time this season. His other game was our FA Cup home defeat by Manchester City. The only other game he has refereed between the two clubs was our 2-2 home draw in December 2021. On that occasion Liverpool's Andy Robertson was shown a straight red card for serious foul play. Emerson Royal was Robertson's 77th minute victim.

Did you know? - Virgil van Dijk has been named Player of the Match in three finals for Liverpool:-

. 2019 Champions League Final
. 2022 League Cup Final
. 2024 League Cup Final
